The Yorkshire Senior Team Foil Championships & Under 14s Team Foil Competition 2026 took place on Sunday 28th June at the York Railway Institute organised by Sheffield Buccaneers Fencing Club. This year we introduced the Under 14s Team Foil Competition as a new part of this event. There were 19 teams in the Senior event and 7 teams in the Under 14s event making this the biggest Yorkshire Team Foil Championships EVER!!! For the Senior event, in addition to teams from Yorkshire clubs, we welcomed 5 ‘Visitor’ teams from outside the Yorkshire Region, namely Lancaster University, Saxon, Stockport Sword Club, Durham Phoenix with 2 teams in the Senior event and one in the Under 14s Event. The standard in the events ranged from recent beginners to top Nationally ranked fencers.
The Senior event with 19 teams started with a round of 4 poules of 4 fenced on 2 pistes and 1 poule of 3. This was followed by an incomplete last 32 with every place being fought off to determine all final positions. This meant teams could get 6, 7 or even 8 team matches. The under 14s Team event with 7 teams started with a round of 2 poules, 1 of 3 and 1 of 4, followed with direct elimination last 8 stage, again with all places being fenced off and teams got 5 or 6 matches.
Our club had 3 Buccaneers teams in the Senior event and 2 in the Under 14s event and also many of our regular club fencers competing in other (sometimes strangely named) teams. As in most years in over a decade the final this year was between Sheffield Buccaneers and Louth. This year the Louth team of Wilf and Archie Broughton and Joe Blair were fencing fantastically well and our team of Mike McKay, Nathan Doherty and Jacob Smith despite their best efforts went down 45-15.
Fortunately the weather had cooled off a little following a very hot week. We brought a freezer full of ice lollies to help keep people cool, especially the Under 14s. Everybody really enjoyed the chance to have loads and LOADS of fencing against a wide range of different fencers and with such enthusiastic appreciation of the event, I am sure it can be even bigger and better next year.
To organise, plan and run this competition is a very substantial and complicated task. The success of the event is very much down to the many people that contributed to that organisation. So our greatest thanks go to those involved in all those tasks.
